[The White House is considering limiting immigrant asylum at the border] According to CNN, the White House is considering taking executive action to limit the ability of immigrants who cross illegally to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. The actions the White House is considering appear to be an extension of some of the harshest measures included in a compromise version of the border bill that Republicans vetoed. The White House has not yet made a final decision on actions it is considering involving the use of Section 212f authority between ports of entry to combat illegal border crossings. During his tenure, former U.S. President Trump invoked Section 212f of the Immigration Act in an attempt to close the U.S. southern border to asylum seekers who crossed the border illegally, but was blocked by the court. This is an example of the limits on the U.S. president’s ability to close borders. If the White House moves forward with the plan, it could face legal challenges.
